Anthropic ended free subscription usage for OpenClaw and all third-party Claude Code harnesses, forcing separate pay-as-you-go billing starting April 4.
Anthropic notified Claude Code subscribers via email that third-party tools like OpenClaw can no longer draw from subscription limits, effective April 4 at noon Pacific. Users must now pay separately via a pay-as-you-go model for any third-party harness usage. Anthropic head of Claude Code Boris Cherny cited unsustainable usage patterns as the driver. The timing coincides with OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger announcing he's joining OpenAI, with Steinberger publicly accusing Anthropic of copying features before locking out open-source competitors.
If you're running OpenClaw or any third-party harness against Claude Code's subscription tier, your workflow is now broken or about to get expensive. Anthropic explicitly says this policy extends to ALL third-party harnesses, not just OpenClaw — so any custom tooling or orchestration layer you've built on top of Claude Code subscriptions is at risk. Pay-as-you-go API pricing at scale hits very differently than a flat subscription.
